Mikvé, définition : bain de purification rituel. Les femmes juives ont l’obligation de s’y rendre une fois par mois, et les hommes s’y rendent en général la veille du Chabat et des jours de fête religieuse.
L’eau du mikvé peut être d’origine souterraine : source, puits, nappe phréatique, ou provenir de pluie de neige ou de glace fondue (mais uniquement si elle est recueillie dans un bassin). L’eau de mer ou de rivière possède les mêmes capacités de purification.
On utilise aussi l’eau du mikvé pour y plonger des ustensiles de cuisine et les rendre ainsi propres à la consommation alimentaire (cacher). L’importance de la présence d’un mikvé dans une communauté est telle que pour financer sa construction, on est même en droit de vendre une synagogue !
